Let me ask you something personal: Are you being thoughtful to your body?
I wasn’t. Not for a long time. I’m 63 now, but for decades I treated my body like it was indestructible. I didn’t exercise. I avoided the doctor. I carried 50 extra pounds and shrugged off every sign my body was asking for help.
I used to joke, “If you find my body next to a treadmill, just know it was dragged there.” My idea of exercise was pulling the plug in a full bathtub and trying to fight the current. Funny? Maybe. But underneath the laughs was a real problem: I wasn’t being kind to the guy inside this body.
Eventually, I got tired of being tired. I started listening to people who’d figured out how to care for their health—without pills, fads, or crazy gym routines. I started learning what it meant to be thoughtful to the body I live in.
Here are three simple (and free!) ways I began turning my health around—ways you can start today.
1. Just Breathe
Most of us never think about our breath. But when you slow down and take deep, intentional breaths, your body thanks you. It clears your mind, reduces anxiety, and increases oxygen flow to your brain.
A man named Wim Hof (pronounced Vihm Hof) teaches powerful breathing techniques that can change how you feel in minutes. Search him on YouTube—his method is simple, powerful, and free.
Try this right now: inhale deep into your belly… then exhale slowly. Do that for a few minutes, and notice what happens. Breathing better is feeling better.
2. Soak Up the Sun
There’s a natural pharmacy just outside your door—it’s called sunlight.
We’ve become so conditioned to indoor living, artificial light, and screen time that we’ve forgotten how healing sunshine can be. Ten to twenty minutes outside, especially in the morning, can elevate your mood, boost your vitamin D levels, and regulate your sleep.
You don’t need a fancy supplement—just step outside and let the sun do its job. Nature built it into the design.
3. Reconnect With the Earth
This one might sound a little “out there,” but hear me out.
Years ago, I was dealing with terrible jet lag after flying internationally. Someone told me to go outside, lie down on the grass, and let my skin touch the earth for 30–60 minutes. No phones. No distractions. Just be still.
I tried it—and it worked. It turns out this practice is called grounding or earthing. When your body touches the earth, it can help reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and balance your energy.
Turns out, the planet knows how to heal you—if you let it.
Your body deserves thoughtfulness!
You don’t need expensive gadgets or trendy diets to feel better. Start with deep breathing, natural sunlight, and reconnecting to the earth. These simple acts can bring you back to balance—and back to yourself.
We only get one body. And if you’re lucky enough to live into your 90’s or 100’s, it’s going to be the vehicle that carries you there. So let’s start treating it like it matters. Because it does.
